Good readers and writers

Nabokov thinks a good reader has imagination, memory, a dictionary, and some artistic sense. I do agree. Like his students, one can lean towards the more emotional approaches to reading. These lead to personal identifications due to experience and nostalgia. This of course is fairly biased, leaving room for misinterpretation and a lack of objectivity, especially on an intellectual level. That being said, the obvious conclusion is that this can only happen to a point as we are humans and we are prone to operate emotionally. What matters is the kind of imagination the reader approaches the literature with. Nabokov emphasizes an artistic and scientific type of temperament, combining the qualities of passion and patience.
I believe passion, patience, objectivity, a broad imagination, and experience are the characteristics of a good reader. I consider myself to be a good reader. I may not be considered the strongest reader as I take time to absorb most literature, but I am certainly patient, objective, and imaginative while I do. It takes time to acquaint oneself with a book, but the time invested is worth the experience.
